Some several months ago (has it really been that long??), a small group of Underdogs came up with a crazy idea: find a way to show Sean that we are all here for him as he fights cancer. That was the start of the Strong For Sean Project.
As we worked through the careful stages of planning - deciding on bracelets, colors, sayings, charity - we were all wondering if there would be any support. Would people actually be interested in buying bracelets from a random group of girls? We decided to go ahead with it anyway because whether there were 8 or 800 people buying the bracelets, it was important to us to be able to do something.
Much to all of our surprise, it ended up being the latter. In December 2012 we sold the 800th and final Strong For Sean bracelet. 800 bracelets worldwide.
All of the money we raised from the bracelets was put aside to make a donation to the American Cancer Society in Sean’s name. A grand total of $1700 from 800 bracelets. I still can’t believe that a random idea in an online chat turned into something so wonderful and amazing. And it was because of all of you.
After donating the money we decided to do one more thing for Sean, something that he could look at whenever he wanted and know how loved he truly is. Lots of ideas were thrown around and we eventually decided on a scrapbook. We felt that this would be the perfect way to include everyone who had contributed to the project.
The scrapbook documents the entire project, from conception to conclusion. And, most importantly, it includes all of YOU. Within the pages of the book are all the names of people who ordered online, all the tweets that you sent us, all the pictures you took of you rocking your Strong For Sean bracelet. We wanted Sean to be able to see all of the wonderful people who had a hand in making this project the enormous success it was.
We gave Sean the scrapbook on Sunday March 3rd, 2013 in Kingston. We felt it appropriate for him to receive it while touring overseas because of the worldwide nature of the project and its sentiments. The video above shows his reaction to the book and to the news of how much we ended up raising and donating in his name. It was an absolute honor to be there for such a special moment.
Sean said he’d never forget this project. I know every single one of us who has been involved from the start feels exactly the same. You all made us believe in the strength and love of the Underdog family. Because that’s what we are - a family. Thank you all for everything these past several months. The project may be at a close but the feelings associated with it will always live in our hearts. “Strong for Sean” isn’t just a bracelet, it’s knowing that none of us will ever be alone so long as we have each other.
